IT'S BACK, IT'S BETTER, IT'S BIGGER AND IN MORE LOCATIONS.

Kwesi Johnson directs this programme that enables Kompany Malakhi to work with a strong team of established artists, who's profession is the very thing they teach. There are classes Breakin' Turntablism, Graffiti Art and MC skills, the four key elements of Hip Hop culture under one roof. The academy will help to train a new generation of versatile artists that will supply the increasing demand for skilled and professional performers with a grounding in Hip Hop culture, for dance, theatre, film, television, in fact, across all the creative industries. Kompany Malakhi will also be looking out for potential apprentices and trainees for their touring company. The programme is professionally delivered by a collective of DJ's, music producers, dancers, MC’s and graffiti artists who are passionate about their work, are excellent teachers, and they are also good people.

The Hip Hop Akademy began with familiar forms, such as the original street dances; Breakin’ (Breakdancing), Lockin and Poppin, alongside Graffiti Art, Turntablism, Music Production and Rap\Spoken Word. In the future we will offer supplementary session such as graphic design, script writing, choreography and physical theatre in order to give more tools to the creative process and to illustrate how the skills are transferable to other industries.

The Hip Hop Akademy is open to everyone aged 13 upwards. The beauty about Hip Hop is that you can be 13 to 40 and still be obsessed. This is a training ground to nurture, inspire and develop through Hip Hop Culture and it’s original philosophy of Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun, Supported by Knowledge and Wisdom.

Kwesi Johnson
Kwesi Johnson is the Artistic Director of Kompany Malakhi. Formed in 1994 out of a desire to fuse commercial and artistic art forms and dance styles in performance and to develop an education programme that ensures the nurturing of the artists and audiences of tomorrow.

He coined the phrase ‘Griographer’ to best describe his approach to making dance theatre. ‘Griot’ being an Afrikan story teller/social commentator who utilises many art forms to tell stories and pass on history, and a choreographer who creates movement.

Kwesi is part of a new generation of artists who are bringing their eclectic cultural experiences to dance. He graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 1991 and has trained in Hip Hop dance styles, contemporary dance, ballet, jazz, Capoeira, and is experienced in Afrikan and Caribbean dance.

Kwesi will teach elements of Breakin’, Lockin’ and Poppin in the morning part of the session. He will then use these elements combined with lyrics and images to generate movement.

----------------------------------------------

DJ Para
DJ Para acquired his taste for Hip Hop around 1989. At this time his close friends were listening to the likes of Public Enemy / Big Daddy Kane and after borrowing a few tapes Para became instantly hooked. Through the local Hip Hop community, he experimented with all the elements and settled with DJing.

DJ Para will teach the foundations of Turntablism, particularly scratching and beat mixing.

ChimpChilla
Chimpchilla started dancing in 1999 and is now one of the UK's top poppers. He has represented the UK twice at the UK Bboy Championships (2004 & 2005). He is a member of the Electric Boogaloo family and creator of the Funkstylerz UK dance company. Chimp has traveled worldwide to compete and perform and has learnt from many of the pioneers of funkstyle dance.
