3 days of experiments, new ideas and new music working towards three new commissioned pieces for Kompany Malakhi’s 2012 tour.

What an amazing weekend we had with:

Kwesi Johnson (Kompany Malakhi, UK ) Anthony Egéa (Cie Revolution, France) Victor Quijada (Rubberbandance, Canada)

Respond-React was for dancers interested in the synthesis of Urban dance styles, particularly Breakin’, with contemporary dance and physical theatre, with three choreographers at the forefront when it comes to synthesising these styles of movement. They were joined by three world class musicians, Franck II Louise, Jasper Gahunia and Luke Harney who created original music daily.

Stay tuned and we will post the footage here soon.

Biographies of the Choreographers

Kwesi Johnson, Artistic Director/Choreographer Kompany Malakhi

A self‑styled ‘Griographer’, who is part of a new generation of artists who are bringing their eclectic experiences to dance and physical theatre. Using physical theatre, contemporary dance and vernacular dance forms he has been pushing creative boundaries and developing fresh and sophisticated ideas since 1994. He is interested in movement that’s created from an emotional foundation, which allows the styles he uses to create narratives. After being immersed in Hip Hop culture and taking the path of Bboyin and later being influenced by UK Jazz Fuzion, Kwesi went on to train at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and worked with companies and choreographers such as Lloyd Newson, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Companie Duroure, CandoCo Dance Company and The Hittite Empire before creating Kompany Malakhi in 1994.

Anthony Egéa Cie Revolution

As early as 1984, Anthony Egéa set out on a long process of learning hip hop dance. After having become familiar with a large variety of techniques, he joined the Ecole Supérieure Rosella Hightower in Cannes on a choreographic scholarship program to complete his training. Having also won the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères Lavoisier scholarship, Anthony Egéa went on a study course at Alvin Ailey’s Dance Theater in New York. This drove him to purify dance moves and think up more abstract forms. He measures virtuosity against the infinitely small, what can be shown against what can be expressed. His creations include Triptyk (2001), and Amazones (2003), Soli (2005) – Soli 2Urban Ballet (2008), a piece for ten dancers and Clash (2009)

www.cie-revolution.com

Victor Quijada

Choreographer/Co-Artistic Director Rubberbandance Group

The path of choreographer Victor Quijada began in Los Angeles, where from a young age, he was deeply influenced by Hip Hop culture. Introduced to formal dance and theater at L.A. County High School for the Arts, Quijada became a protégé of Post-modern pioneer Rudy Perez before working with dance icon Twyla Tharp. Quijada worked shortly with Eliot Feld before becoming a demi-soloist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal. In 2002 he formed RUBBERBANDANCE GROUP, after years of exploring dance and theater from urban, classical, and contemporary angles.

Quijada has directed dance on film, video, and for televised broadcast. He has created work for Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Met, Jeune Ballet du Quebec, Peter Boal & Company (NYC), Transitions Dance Company (London), Chamber Dance Project, and notably Self Observation Without Judgement for Scottish Dance Theater, which won the 2004 National Dance Award for Best Modern Repertory. He has received the Peter Darrell Choreography Award (UK), Bonnie Bird North American Award (UK), Choreography in Media Honors, and was nominated for an American Choreography Award. In 2008, Quijada was invited to participate at the Big Intensive on Directing Dance at Sadler’s Wells in London. In 2009 he was awarded the OQAJ/RIDEAU Prize for his work Punto Ciego. Since September 2007, Victor Quijada is Resident Artist of Cinquieme Salle at Place des Arts de Montreal.

Including a short performance by Kompany Malakhi’s workshop leaders, this workshop uses graffiti art as the source to create movement and a metaphor for group or solo performances.

The workshop is perfect for most modern styles of dance and to motivate young men to take part in choreography. It is a great introduction to creating movement without being a dance workshop.

Promoting Kompany Malakhi’s interest in synthesising art forms to create something unique, these workshops can be tailor made for each group.

Physical Flicks

This workshop gets participants to analyse the meaning of their movement and choreography by using scripts, plays or song lyrics as their starting point. They will then create a short dance and capture it on film. Perfect for bringing English literature, media, music and dance and drama departments together.

Language of Rhythm

This workshop finds different ways to create movement using a rhythmic structure and ways to create music using the dynamism of movement including contemporary dance, Irish Dance, body percussion, tap dance. It is a very energetic exploration of movement and rhythm bringing music and dance departments together.

Parkour, Breakin’ and Physical Theatre

This workshop is perfect for boys and young men, but doesn’t exclude girls and young women. Combining Parkour, Breakin’ and physical theatre, it’s perfect for learning some incredible movement with a theatrical perspective. A seamless blend of art and sport.

Konnako and dance

Combining vocal percussion sounds of classical Indian music and contemporary dance techniques to create polyrhythmic music and movement. A very interactive workshop of sounds, rhythm and movement and a real test for the participants musicality in previously unexplored ways.
